Neonatology

This excerpt of Elizabeth Alexander's poignant poem, "Neonatology" was read on Krista Tippet's "On Being" program on NPR on January 6th, as a part of a piece called "Words that Shimmer."
Giving birth is like jazz, something from silence,
then all of it. Long, elegant boats,
blood-boiling sunshine, human cargo,
a handmade kite —

                                 Postpartum.
No longer a celebrity, pregnant lady, expectant.
It has happened; you are here,
each dram you drain a step away
from flushed and floating, lush and curled.
Now you are the pink one, the movie star.
It has happened. You are here,

and you sing, mewl, holler, peep,
swallow the light and bubble it back,
shine, contain multitudes, gleam. You

are the new one, the movie star,
and birth is like jazz,
from silence and blood, silence
then everything,

jazz.
The full poem can be found on Elizabeth Alexander's website.

New moms get their own word

A recent post on the NY Times motherlode blog includes the word "Neomamma," to describe the phenomenon that is the brand-new mom. Melissa Sher, founder of the website mammalingo, writes:

You know who doesn’t have their own dictionary entry? New moms. It’s bold, but I’m going to take it upon myself to speak for every new mom ever to say that we deserve a word of our own. We want something to describe being a first-time, clueless new mother who doesn’t know what she’s doing, doesn’t yet have maternal instinct (but thinks she’s supposed to) and is still bleeding and wearing maternity clothes. Oh, and did I forget to mention that she’s a wee bit tired? I don’t want to do your work for you, but I was thinking she could be called a “neomamma.”

About Mindful Moms

Mindful Moms of Brooklyn
Mom & Baby Group
Why do I need to join a mom & baby group?
New moms tend to push their own needs aside and very easily become isolated and feel overwhelmed. As you prepare for your little one to arrive don’t forget to have a plan in place so that you can receive the caring and support you will very much need. Our professionally led mother & baby group will provide you with a comfortable place to bring baby and ensure that you continue to nourish yourself as you learn to nourish baby.
Mindful Moms is designed by Charlotte Malkmus, LMHC and Karen Rosen, LCSW, two therapists/moms with a down to earth style who are excited to be a part of this very unique time in the life of your family. We will help you create the support and space you need to face the challenges of the hardest job you’ll ever do with the least amount of sleep!
What can I expect at Mindful Mom group sessions?
  • Be invited to share the joys, pains, and anxieties of new mommyhood in a comfortable space with your baby.
  • Meet other new moms in the neighborhood and join in a conversation that will help you discover the parenting style that works best for you and your family.
  • Create friendships that will decrease the feelings of isolation that can accompany new mommyhood and will sustain you on your journey through parenthood.
  • Process your birth experience and its impact on your mind and body.
  • Discuss strategies for taking care of yourself, your relationship, and baby.
  • Practice getting out of the house and bring your newborn into a comfortable baby- friendly space where you can feed, change him/her, and get spit up on without worry!
